Here at Barclay Mowing we don't  think gardening should be complicated, but with the huge amount of gardening books and websites offering an abundance of sometimes conflicting information, it can often get quite confusing.

If you are thinking of starting a veggie garden here are a few great easy to grow plants you can plant in Auckland in May.  To keep things simple, we've limited i

  • Garlic: May is the perfect time to plant garlic cloves in Auckland.  You'll have to have some patience with this one as garlic takes a while to grow.   If you can wait, mid-summer will give you a bountiful crop.
  • Kale:  Ok we know its not everyone's favourite but give it a chance, kale is more versatile than you think.  And the good news is, once you get a taste for it, you can grow it all year round.  It likes a sunny, sheltered spot in the garden.
  • Spinach: This hardy leafy green thrives in cool late-autumn temperatures. Planting it now ensures fast growth and sweet, tender leaves without the risk of the plant "bolting" (going to seed prematurely), which often happens during hot summer days.
  • Broccoli: Planting broccoli seedlings in May allows the plant to mature during winter. The cool climate prevents the heads from opening too quickly, resulting in tight, sweet, and nutrient-dense curds for your dinner table.
  • Broad Beans: These are incredibly robust and germinate easily in cooling soils. They act as a fantastic winter cover crop that fixes nitrogen naturally into your soil, improving soil quality for your spring planting later in the year, because we know once you get the gardening bug, you'll want to continue.
