Pansies

Pansies and violas are reliable annuals are the ultimate choice for continuous winter colour. They thrive in Auckland's cooler autumn and winter temperatures, creating low-growing mounds of bright, cheerful faces in garden beds or patio pots.

Winter Roses

If you have a shady garden, no problem, you can still get winter colour in the form of Winter roses or Hellebore. These tough, shade-loving perennials flower beautifully from mid-winter into spring. They are exceptionally low-maintenance, stay contained without spreading aggressively, and look stunning tucked under trees or large shrubs.

Calendula or English Marigold

Extremely easy to grow from seedlings in May, calendula produces bright orange and yellow flowers all winter long. They do not have aggressive roots, and any self-sown seedlings are easily managed or pulled out.  Dead heading will encourage further flower production and keep your garden in bloom for longer.  They like sun and colder weather so perfect for the Auckland garden in winter. They also have healing properties and have been used for skin irritation, reducing inflamation and aiding the healing of small cuts and wounds

Cyclamen:

Another plant suited to a shady garden is Cyclamen. It has unique swept-back petals and beautifully marbled leaves.

Cyclamens love Auckland's damp, cool winter weather. They are compact, non-invasive, and stay beautifully contained in pots, window boxes, or shady garden borders.
