Tips to keep your lawn looking great

To keep your lawn lush in Auckland's unique coastal climate, you need a smart mix of watering, feeding, and trimming. For our loyal customers in the East Auckland area, these expert lawn care tips will ensure your grass thrives year-round while keeping your property looking immaculate.

Regular Mowing

Seems obvious right? And of course we would advocate for regular lawn mowing as that's what we do, but its more than that, there's some science behind it.

Regular mowing stimulates healthy, lateral growth, helps prevent thatching (thatch is a spongy layer of dead grass tissue, stems, and roots that accumulates between the green vegetation and the soil surface) and naturally chokes out weeds. During peak spring and summer growth, your lawn will need mowing every 1-2 weeks. If this sounds like too much work and you live in the east Auckland area, give us a call

Water well but not too often

Auckland's dry spells can quickly burn out a lawn. Instead of a quick daily sprinkle, water your lawn deeply once or twice a week. This encourages strong, deep root growth. It is best to water early in the morning so the moisture soaks into the soil before the afternoon heat.

 Follow the "1/3 Rule"

Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass at a time

Cutting too close to the ground leaves your grass weak and vulnerable to invasive weeds. For the best lawn care in East Auckland, keeping your mower on a higher setting—especially through summer—helps the soil retain moisture and protects roots from the drying coastal sun.

 Sharpen Your Lawn Mower Blades

Keeping your lawn mowing blades sharp give clean cuts helping your grass stay healthy and resist disease. Blunt blades will chop and hack at your lawn and will leave an untidy finish. If this sounds too difficult, contact Barclay mowing for a clean sharp cut.

Fertiliser

Fertilising your lawn twice a year with a slow release fertiliser in spring time and autumn will keep your lawn in tip top shape throughout the year.
